My LASIK Journey Continues…

Wednesday I posted that I would be getting LASIK eye surgery in just a few hours. I was so grateful to all of you who commented/tweeted/emailed me wishing me luck and saying that you were praying for me! So I thought I would fill you in on my day…

Wednesday morning I was a little nervous, so I spent my time doing things to distract myself around until around 11:00am when I needed to drop little girl off at my parents… the plan was for her to spend the night there since I knew the first 24 hours would be the worst and I was afraid of her wanting to touch my face. After we dropped her off, I ate a big lunch {They instruct you to eat plenty so the Valium doesn’t make you sick} and Wes drove us 45+ minutes to the clinic where the LASIK would be performed.
In the procedure room, the nurses had me lie on the table while the doctor reviewed my scans. I was mentally preparing myself to get the party started when the doctor told the nurses to sit me up. And he had one of the nurses go and retrieve my glasses so I could clearly see what he was about to explain to me. Long story short, there was something in the scan that concerned the doctor – He was concerned I was at a risk for Ectasia {something that would cause me to lose my vision and not have it be able to be corrected} – but he couldn’t be certain since the rest of my scans from before were completely normal.We checked in at 2:00, paid, and waited to be called back. When they called me, I was taken to a special room where they did a pre-surgery scan just to be sure everything was ok – this is a scan they didn’t have at my local office. Following the scan I was taken to a room where I filled out a little more paperwork {I had already filled out a bunch and brought it with me}, went over the specifics of the procedure and recovery with the nurse {my husband was in the room as well}, took the Valium they gave me and waited. After about 10-15 minutes they came and got me – I handed over my glasses to my husband and he was sent off to the waiting room and was told I’d be out in about 20 minutes.

Needless to say, I did not get LASIK Wednesday. BUT. It’s not over yet! The doctor told me he wanted to show the scan to a cornea specialist who would be able to tell if the doctor was seeing what he thought he saw in the scan, and that he’d call Thursday {yesterday} to let me know. They also went ahead and scheduled me for this coming Wednesday just in case he was wrong.

I’m not going to lie, I gave up hope that I could have the procedure. I was confused because everything seemed to have lined up so perfectly I thought surely it would work out. I waited all day Thursday and received no call. So this afternoon I called them. Turns out the specialist had no concerns whatsoever – and so the doctor said we could proceed! And for my “troubles” and the money we spent on gas, the doctor told me they’d be taking $200 off my fee!

So I get to go through this whole process again Wednesday – hopefully for reals this time – why do I ever doubt that God is aalllwaayyysss in control??

Thank you all again for your support!

  1. Kate, glad to hear how you are doing! I had been wondering about the procedure.

    That picture of Hayden is so cute, and it's like she is saying "oh well— what can you do!" as in don't worry about it! ๐Ÿ™‚ That sounds like you were on a bit of a roller coaster but I am glad it's working out. I am sure they never can be too careful. It is best to be cautious.

    I hope you feel better soon, I just had a funky cold. Not fun!

  2. Oh man that is kind of a bummer, but at least they are taking $200 off! I've been wanting to get it done, so please share all the details of your experience!ย  Good luck!!! Oh and btw, I read your posts everyday but at work it wont let me comment b/c my work computer doesn't have the newest version of internet explorer and your blog tells me i can't comment without it!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Roller coaster is the perfect way to describe my last few days lol! And yes it's definitely reassuring that they are extremely cautious – I'd rather wait an extra week than risk losing my vision! Thanks… hopefully this cold ends before the procedure… idk if they have any rules about being sick, but it's probably not advisable lol

  4. I know right?!? I intend to write a detailed post about the whole experience… once I actually get to have it! and probably a couple on how the recovery goes… That's crazy it won't let you comment? I'll have to check out Disqus's site and see if there's anything I can change to help out with that, but I'm guessing it's their program ๐Ÿ™ But thank you so much for reading anywaysย  – it means a lot to me ๐Ÿ™‚ {and I sure enjoy keeping up with you blog as well!}

  5. Oh geeze ๐Ÿ™ I'm sorry it didn't work out better for you this past week as far as getting the surgery done…but now you get a nice little discount! ๐Ÿ™‚ Praying for you sweetie! ๐Ÿ™‚ I know that everything will turn out wonderfully! ๐Ÿ™‚
